Derrius Guice (RB – LSU) ML +1400
Why We Love Derrius Guice To Win The Heisman:
Derrius Guice literally cannot be tackled. After filling in for the oft-injured college superstar and Heisman hopeful Leonard Fournette, it’s feasible to wonder why Guice didn’t receive more touches in 2016. Guice led the SEC in rushing, touchdowns and all-purpose yards in 2016. Incredible for a guy who only had 20+ carries in a game three times last year. In those contests, Guice averaged 225 ypg and scored 8 TD’s (1 receiving). Tigers’ 2018 football philosophy, give this guy the rock and get the hell out of the way. Should be noted that Guice is an outstanding kick returner as well.
Games That Matter*:
10/7 LSU @ #15 Florida
10/14 LSU v. #11 Auburn
11/4 LSU @ #1 Alabama
11/18 LSU @ #25 Tennessee
11/25 LSU v Texas A&M
A relatively week non-conference schedule features the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX against BYU. Outside of that game and the heralded SEC schedule, Guice and LSU should run all over the likes of Chattanooga, Syracuse and Troy. Guice could very easily be the country’s leading rusher heading into the month of October, around the same time of year Lamar Jackson earned his well-deserved Heisman attention.

Why Guice Won’t Win The Heisman:
The same obstacle that kept Leonard Fournette from winning the Heisman the past two seasons: Alabama. Last season LSU as a team was held to 31 yards on 27 carries, Fournette had 17 carries for 35 yards and Guice had 8 yards on two carries. In 2015, Fournette was essentially in the Heisman driver seat before crashing head-on into a brick wall otherwise known as the Alabama rush defense. That game Fournette had only 31 yards on 19 carries and finished 6th in Heisman voting. I like Guice a lot, but if history repeats itself there’s no climbing out of that hole that late in the season and like history, ‘Bama is once again stacked on defense with 5 players on the SEC preseason All-Defensive First Team.
Would I Bet On Guice To Win The Heisman?:
Not confidently. In my opinion, LSU would need to beat ‘Bama (combined with a good rushing day for Guice), win the SEC West and Guice would have to rack up 2,000+ yards and 20+ touchdowns for Guice to win the Heisman. I don’t see ALL of those scenario’s happening.
