Week 8…Meat Locks: The non-Vegan Edition

-Keith Lofton

Is 2-4 good when picking games? Asking for someone that filled in for me last week (well not really)…I’m back and ready for a bounce back week. If you were watching college football you know things got weird last week. I’m always one to get weird but not when it comes to my picks though. I want to see a little more normalcy when it comes to my picks this weekend. Please? And by the way, I’m 1-3 in my Friday night picks. Do I even bother? So many questions, so few answers.

Friday Night Pot Roast – HARD PASS

I’m looking at a 4 game slate for Friday and I can’t see one game where I know enough about the teams playing in said game to say “take this team.”  If you had to hold me to the fire I’d say Western Kentucky (-10) and Air Force (-7). As I’ve said before, Nevada is a terrible football team and terrible football teams can’t stop a dedicated, committed option attack. Still though, is Air Force a team you can count on to win a game on the road by 7+? Hmmmm…give me the hard pass minus the P’s.

Arizona St. at Utah (-9.5)

Arizona St is coming off a monster win at home against Washington. They pulled off the upset while Utah fell 1-yard or one QB that could look into the back of the end zone, of said upset. Both could be coming in riding high but it’s the Sun Devils with their pitchforks in the sky that are feeling good. The Utes come back home to a place that has always been good for them. Troy Williams and Zack Moss played their best games as Utes in my opinion and I believe they take that momentum into this game. Before the Washington game, Arizona State’s defense had been awful and had given up 30+ to all of their opponents this season. Washington could not get out of their own way and went into ASU territory all night but mistake after mistake kept them from scoring. Utah makes very few big mistakes, wins the turnover battle and keeps things rolling on the offensive side of the field with another 30+ point scoring barrage against a suspect ASU D. Utah’s defense wants to get back on track after getting shredded by USC. I’ve got Utah -9.5 with a final of 34-23. The O/U is 56.5, my score has that at 57. That’s too close for comfort!

Kansas at #4 TCU (-38.5)

It’s a good thing Jayhawk fans have a great basketball program to root for because their football program has gotta be top 5 worst in the country. They’re so bad. TCU is so good. Kenny Hill and Co. are really good and when they’re balling, A.G.C. Stadium is a tough place to go play at night. Their defense is playing great football, the offense is scoring 41 against real football teams. I expect the Horned Frogs to score 35+ before half. Give me TCU at home, 56-14. They might even be able to cover the over of 58.5 by themselves.   If Kansas can get on the board or even snag a couple junk scores late, that’s an easy one.

North Carolina at #14 Virginia Tech (-21)

Did I mention last week that North Carolina was a terrible football team too? I still firmly believe that even though they kept it closer than I expected against Virginia last week. Well, VA Tech is a much better football team and playing at home against the Tarheels this week. Josh Jackson and the Hokies offense has really transformed under 2nd year head coach Justin Fuente. Meanwhile, the defense and special teams units have stayed consistent to Hokie football. Coming off a bye week, they should be able to vamp up the scoring against a pretty miserable football team. I see things getting ugly in this game and Tech sends UNC home packing by halftime. Final score 34-9
#19 Michigan at #2 Penn St

I’ve been looking at this game all season. I thought this could be a pivotal game for the final four when the season started. After watching Michigan football look like Florida football for much of this season I find myself leaning more and more towards Penn St. The Nittany Lions are really good and coming off a bye week while watching Michigan hold onto a tough OT win at home against Indiana. Michigan’s inept offense and Penn State’s lethal offense showcased with Heisman frontrunner Saquon Barkley and sick sidekick Trace McSorley (one of the coolest names in football) I can tell you right now, Penn St will roll. Give me PSU at Beaver Stadium at night 27-17. With Penn St only giving up 10 PPG to opponents and Michigan only giving up 14 PPG, it’d be hard pressed to take the over in this game…take the under.

Colorado at #15 Washington St (-10)

We still picking PAC12 after dark games? Yep. Colorado is reeling and hasn’t been great after an awesome season for the Buffs last year. Washington St will be looking to rack up some points after getting shut down by Cal last week. What better team to do that against than a team that just gave up 36 to Oregon St. Give me Wazu -10. 41-24 and the OVER (53.5)

I’ve got some meaty locks here y’all. Don’t sleep on me this week.
